Who We Are

The Taiwan TG Butterfly Garden (蝶園) is a community-driven resource for the transgender community in Taiwan. Built on a collaborative wiki platform powered by MediaWiki, this space has served as a hub for sharing information, organizing gatherings, and fostering connections among members and allies.

Our community has grown through shared experiences — from online discussions to in-person meetups — always with the goal of mutual support and visibility.

The Taiwan TG Butterfly Garden, known locally as 蝶園, emerged from the collective efforts of transgender individuals and allies seeking a dedicated space for sharing knowledge and mutual support. Operating as a community-driven wiki, this platform has become an essential repository where members contribute resources on healthcare, legal rights, and social experiences relevant to Taiwan’s transgender community. Through collaborative editing and open discussion, the garden grows organically, reflecting the diverse voices and needs of its participants. Online forums and periodic in-person gatherings further strengthen these bonds, creating a network of care that transcends digital boundaries and affirms the dignity and visibility of transgender people across Taiwanese society.

Taiwan’s transgender community has long navigated a complex social landscape shaped by traditional values and evolving modern attitudes. Community spaces like the Butterfly Garden offer a vital counterbalance, providing a sanctuary where individuals can explore identity, share personal stories, and access reliable information without judgment. The collaborative nature of the platform encourages members to document both challenges and triumphs, from navigating healthcare systems to celebrating milestones in self-discovery. These shared narratives build solidarity and empower newcomers with practical knowledge. By fostering open dialogue in Mandarin and other local languages, the community ensures that support remains accessible and culturally grounded, strengthening resilience across generations of transgender Taiwanese.

Beyond its digital presence, the Butterfly Garden community actively participates in broader advocacy and cultural exchange throughout Taiwan. Through organized meetups, discussion groups, and participation in public events, members work to increase transgender visibility and promote understanding among the general public. These activities help bridge gaps between the transgender community and allied supporters, including families, educators, and healthcare professionals. The garden’s wiki platform continues to evolve, with volunteers maintaining and updating content to reflect the latest developments in legal protections, medical resources, and social services. This ongoing commitment to shared knowledge and community care ensures that the Butterfly Garden remains a cornerstone of support for transgender individuals across Taiwan.

A Look Back

The Butterfly Garden has hosted community events over the years, including the Xitou Forest Recreation Area Camping trip held on August 25–26, 2011. These gatherings helped strengthen bonds and create lasting memories for participants.

In late 2017, the community entered a quieter period — described by contributors as a time of "hibernation." While activity on the wiki has slowed, the connections and resources built over the years remain a meaningful part of the community's story.
